Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.0.0/4.1.0/4.2.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The (1) tmemc_save_get_next_page and (2) tmemc_save_get_next_inv functions and the (3) TMEMC_SAVE_GET_POOL_UUID sub-operation in the Transcendent Memory (TMEM) in Xen 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 "do not check incoming guest output buffer pointers," which allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and host crash) or execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors. NOTE: this issue was originally published as part of CVE-2012-3497, which was too general; CVE-2012-3497 has been SPLIT into this ID and others.
The weakness was released 11/23/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-6034 since 11/23/2012. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/20/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70184 (GLSA-201309-24 : Xen: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78268), Tenable (70184), SecurityFocus (BID 55410†), OSVDB (85199†) and Secunia (SA50472†).
