Linux Foundation Xen 4.0.0/4.1.0/4.2.0 do_tmem_destroy_pool input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Foundation Xen 4.0.0/4.1.0/4.2.0. The impacted element is the function do_tmem_destroy_pool. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2012-6035. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.0.0/4.1.0/4.2.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function do_tmem_destroy_pool. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The do_tmem_destroy_pool function in the Transcendent Memory (TMEM) in Xen 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 does not properly validate pool ids, which allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and host crash) or execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors. NOTE: this issue was originally published as part of CVE-2012-3497, which was too general; CVE-2012-3497 has been SPLIT into this ID and others.

The weakness was disclosed 11/23/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-6035 since 11/23/2012. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/20/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70184 (GLSA-201309-24 : Xen: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78268), Tenable (70184), SecurityFocus (BID 55410†), OSVDB (85199†) and Secunia (SA50472†). The entries VDB-6108, VDB-6106, VDB-6109 and VDB-6110 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
