Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function dissect_isakmp of the component ISAKMP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The dissect_isakmp function in epan/dissectors/packet-isakmp.c in the ISAKMP dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.12 and 1.8.x before 1.8.4 uses an incorrect data structure to determine IKEv2 decryption parameters, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was released 12/05/2012 with Wireshark as Bug 7855 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-6059. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
