A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component FreeType. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. FreeType before 2.4.9, as used in Mozilla Firefox Mobile before 10.0.4 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid heap read operation and memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted dictionary data in a Type 1 font.
The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at prod.lists.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1132 since 02/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
