Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component OpenGL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The OpenGL implementation in Apple Mac OS X before 10.7.3 does not properly perform OpenGL Shading Language (aka GLSL) compilation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted program.
The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2012 by Chris Evans and Marc Schoenefeld with Google Chrome Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3457 since 09/13/2011. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/06/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57797 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119919 (Apple Mac OS X Lion v10.7.3 and Security Update 2012-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2012-02-01-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
