Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function EPATHOBJ::bFlatten. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The EPATHOBJ::bFlatten function in win32k.sys in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT does not check whether linked-list traversal is continually accessing the same list member, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (infinite traversal) via vectors that trigger a crafted PATHRECORD chain.
The weakness was disclosed 05/24/2013 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at theverge.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3661. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
