Wireshark up to 1.8.6 GTPv2 Dissector input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.6 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component GTPv2 Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

epan/dissectors/packet-gtpv2.c in the GTPv2 dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.7 calls incorrect functions in certain contexts related to ciphers, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was presented 05/24/2013 with Wireshark (Website). The advisory is shared at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3555 since 05/20/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70181 (Fedora 19 : wireshark-1.10.2-6.fc19 (2013-17661)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166492 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:1084-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84366), Tenable (70181), SecurityFocus (BID 59992†), Secunia (SA53425†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40244†).
