A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.5 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component DCP ETSI Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The dissect_diagnosticrequest function in epan/dissectors/packet-reload.c in the REsource LOcation And Discovery (aka RELOAD) dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.6 uses an incorrect integer data type, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted integer values in a packet.
The weakness was published 03/07/2013 by Moshe Kaplan as wnpa-sec-2013-29 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2486 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75017 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0947-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166474 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0911-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
