Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.5 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component RELOAD Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
epan/dissectors/packet-reload.c in the REsource LOcation And Discovery (aka RELOAD) dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.6 uses incorrect integer data types, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted integer values in a packet, related to the (1) dissect_icecandidates, (2) dissect_kinddata, (3) dissect_nodeid_list, (4) dissect_storeans, (5) dissect_storereq, (6) dissect_storeddataspecifier, (7) dissect_fetchreq, (8) dissect_findans, (9) dissect_diagnosticinfo, (10) dissect_diagnosticresponse, (11) dissect_reload_messagecontents, and (12) dissect_reload_message functions, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-2486.
The weakness was released 03/06/2013 as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2487 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66254 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : wireshark (SAT Patch Number 7490)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166474 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0911-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82639), Tenable (66254), SecurityFocus (BID 58364†), OSVDB (91003†) and Secunia (SA52471†).
