Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component MS-MMS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The dissect_server_info function in epan/dissectors/packet-ms-mms.c in the MS-MMS dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 does not properly manage string lengths, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet that (1) triggers an integer overflow or (2) has embedded \0 characters in a string.
The weakness was released 03/06/2013 by Alyssa Milburn as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2478 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65557 (Debian DSA-2644-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82630), Tenable (65557), SecurityFocus (BID 58340†), OSVDB (90993†) and Secunia (SA52471†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7931, VDB-7922, VDB-7925 and VDB-7923. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
