Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.5 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown part of the component CSN.1 Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The CSN.1 dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.6 does not properly manage function pointers, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was published 03/06/2013 by Laurent Butti as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2477 since 03/06/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66254 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : wireshark (SAT Patch Number 7490)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82629), Tenable (66254), SecurityFocus (BID 58354†), OSVDB (90992†) and Secunia (SA52471†).
