A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component RTPS2 Dissector. The RTPS and RTPS2 dissectors in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was shared 03/06/2013 as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2480 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
