Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.5 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component MPLS Echo Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The dissect_mpls_echo_tlv_dd_map function in epan/dissectors/packet-mpls-echo.c in the MPLS Echo dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via invalid Sub-tlv data.
The weakness was disclosed 03/06/2013 by Laurent Butti as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2479 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 94 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66254 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : wireshark (SAT Patch Number 7490)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82631), Tenable (66254), SecurityFocus (BID 58350†), OSVDB (90994†) and Secunia (SA52471†). The entries VDB-7931, VDB-7921, VDB-7925 and VDB-7923 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
