A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component RTPS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The RTPS and RTPS2 dissectors in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was presented 03/06/2013 by Alyssa Milburn as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2480 since 03/06/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65557 (Debian DSA-2644-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
