Details
A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Mount Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer signedness error in the dissect_mount_dirpath_call function in epan/dissectors/packet-mount.c in the Mount dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6, when nfs_file_name_snooping is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a negative length value.
The weakness was shared 03/06/2013 by Alyssa Milburn as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2481 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65557 (Debian DSA-2644-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
