Wireshark up to 1.8.5 AMPQ Dissector infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component AMPQ Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The AMPQ dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed packet.

The weakness was published 03/06/2013 by Moshe Kaplan as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2482 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66069 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : wireshark (MDVSA-2013:055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82634), Tenable (66069), SecurityFocus (BID 58353†), OSVDB (90997†) and Secunia (SA52471†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7931, VDB-7921, VDB-7922 and VDB-7923. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
