The weakness was presented 03/06/2013 by Alyssa Milburn as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2475 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74930 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative.
