Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.5 (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component RELOAD Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The dissect_diagnosticrequest function in epan/dissectors/packet-reload.c in the REsource LOcation And Discovery (aka RELOAD) dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.6 uses an incorrect integer data type, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via crafted integer values in a packet.
The weakness was published 03/06/2013 as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2486 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75017 (openSUSE Security Update : wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0947-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166474 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0911-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75017), SecurityFocus (BID 58363†), OSVDB (91002†) and Secunia (SA52471†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7931, VDB-7921, VDB-7922 and VDB-7925. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
