Summary
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark. It has been classified as problematic. This impacts an unknown function of the component DTLS Dissector. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2013-2488. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component DTLS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The DTLS dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 does not validate the fragment offset before invoking the reassembly state machine, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a large offset value that triggers write access to an invalid memory location.
The weakness was shared 03/06/2013 by Laurent Butti as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-2488 since 03/06/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65557 (Debian DSA-2644-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82640), Tenable (65557), SecurityFocus (BID 58365†), OSVDB (91001†) and Secunia (SA52471†). The entries VDB-7931, VDB-7921, VDB-7922 and VDB-7925 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
