Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component FCSP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The FCSP dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.14 and 1.8.x before 1.8.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was presented 03/06/2013 by Moshe Kaplan as Wireshark 1.8.6 Release Notes as not defined release notes (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2485 since 03/06/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66069 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : wireshark (MDVSA-2013:055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166512 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2013:0494-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with tcpdump as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82637), Tenable (66069), SecurityFocus (BID 58362†), OSVDB (91000†) and Secunia (SA52471†).
