Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32.51 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function sctp_sock_migrate. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
A certain Red Hat patch to the sctp_sock_migrate function in net/sctp/socket.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.21, as used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via a crafted SCTP packet.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was shared 06/08/2013 by Darren Lavender (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-2482 since 06/15/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1283 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68334 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2011-1212)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216031 (VMware ESX 4.x Several Security Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0006)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68334), SecurityFocus (BID 49295†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32893†). The entries VDB-4406, VDB-4504, VDB-4545 and VDB-5529 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
