A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome 21.0.1180.89 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component DOM Topology Handler. Google Chrome before 22.0.1229.79 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (DOM topology corruption) via a crafted document.
The weakness was disclosed 09/25/2012 by Gynvael Coldwind (pawlkt) with Google Chrome Security Team as confirmed posting (MITRE CVE) via 2012-2879. The advisory is shared at cve.mitre.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2879 since 05/19/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/14/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 22.0.1229.79 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
