It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.4.9 (Web Server). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component mod_proxy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The mod_proxy module in the Apache HTTP Server 2.4.x before 2.4.10, when a reverse proxy is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (child-process crash) via a crafted HTTP Connection header.
The weakness was presented 07/15/2014 by Marek Kroemeke as Fixed in Apache httpd 2.4.10-dev as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at httpd.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0117 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
A flaw was found in mod_proxy. A remote attacker could send a carefully crafted request to a server configured as a reverse proxy, and cause the child process to crash. This could lead to a denial of service against a threaded MPM.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 99 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76622 (Apache 2.4.x < 2.4.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87264 (Apache HTTP Server Prior to 2.4.10 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.4.10-dev eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94676), Tenable (76622), SecurityFocus (BID 68740†) and OSVDB (109232†). See VDB-6090, VDB-6092, VDB-9602 and VDB-67180 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
