A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version unknown). This issue affects an unknown function of the component ACPI PCI Hotplug Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was presented 08/22/2014 by Gonglei as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5388 since 08/22/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77795 (Fedora 21 : qemu-2.1.1-1.fc21 (2014-10761)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195671 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu, Qemu-kvm Vulnerabilities (USN-2409-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org.
