Linux Kernel up to 3.5.6 TCP tcp_set_keepalive access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation results in access control. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2012-6657. No exploit exists. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.5.6 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function tcp_set_keepalive of the component TCP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/21/2012. The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2014 by Prasad J Pandit with Red Hat as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-6657 since 09/15/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The reason for this vulnerability is this part of code:

if (sk->sk_protocol == IPPROTO_TCP)

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 786 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80070 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2014-1997)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0652-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:

if (sk->sk_protocol == IPPROTO_TCP &&
    sk->sk_type == SOCK_STREAM)

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95962), Tenable (80070), SecurityFocus (BID 69803†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46109†). Further details are available at bugzilla.redhat.com. The entries VDB-10840, VDB-12213, VDB-13142 and VDB-67533 are pretty similar.
