A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.9.4 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the file /tmp/phpglibccheck of the component apache_mod_php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
acinclude.m4, as used in the configure script in PHP 5.5.13 and earlier, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the /tmp/phpglibccheck file.
The weakness was disclosed 09/17/2014 as HT6443 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3981 since 06/05/2014. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78310 (Amazon Linux AMI : php54 (ALAS-2014-367)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185089 (HP-UX Apache Server Suite Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03102)).
Upgrading to version 10.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
