A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark 1.12.0 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function dissect_hip_tlv of the component HIP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The dissect_hip_tlv function in epan/dissectors/packet-hip.c in the HIP dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.1 does not properly handle a NULL tree, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2014 as wnpa-sec-2014-16 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-6426 since 09/16/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79295 (Amazon Linux AMI : wireshark (ALAS-2014-446)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350280 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-446).
Upgrading to version 1.12.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
