Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects the function SnifferDecompress of the component Sniffer Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was shared 09/16/2014 by Chaoqiang Zhang and Lewis Burns as wnpa-sec-2014-19 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-6431 since 09/16/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
