The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Oracle. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3166 since 06/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62637 (MySQL 5.1 < 5.1.64 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19794 (Oracle MySQL October 2012 Critical Patch Update).
