A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in PHP 5.4.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function unserialize. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was presented 10/14/2014 by symeon with HTBridge as Bug 1154500 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3669 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78909 (RHEL 5 : php (RHSA-2014:1824)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.4.34 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at php.net. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17158.
