Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.4.34 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function donote of the file readelf.c of the component fileinfo. The manipulation as part of a ELF File leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was released 10/31/2014 by Francisco Alonso with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.php.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3710 since 05/14/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78728 (Fedora 20 : file-5.19-7.fc20 (2014-13571)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236004 (Red Hat Update for file (RHSA-2016:0760)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
