The pinger in Squid 3.x before 3.4.8 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information or cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted (1) ICMP or (2) ICMP6 packet size.
The weakness was shared 10/06/2014 by Sebastian Krahmer as SQUID-2014:4 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-7142 since 09/22/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Due to incorrect bounds checking Squid pinger binary is vulnerable to denial of service or information leak attack when processing larger than normal ICMP or ICMPv6 packets.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79609 (GLSA-201411-11 : Squid: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169027 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for squid3 (SUSE-SU-2016:1996-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.4.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
