CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Squid Proxy 3.4.6/3.4.7 (Firewall Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Pinger. The manipulation as part of a ICMPv4/ICMPv6 Packet leads to a data processing vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-19. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The pinger in Squid 3.x before 3.4.8 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and crash) via a crafted type in an (1) ICMP or (2) ICMP6 packet.

The weakness was published 10/06/2014 by Sebastian Krahmer as SQUID-2014:4 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at squid-cache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-7141 since 09/22/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

Due to incorrect input validation Squid pinger binary is vulnerable to denial of service or information leak attacks when processing ICMP or ICMPv6 packets.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79576 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 14.10 : squid3 vulnerabilities (USN-2422-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169027 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for squid3 (SUSE-SU-2016:1996-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.4.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17177.
