Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel on 64-bit (Operating System) (version unknown). This affects an unknown function of the component espfix64. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-17. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 11/23/2014 by Andy Lutomirski as x86_64, traps: Stop using IST for #SS as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-9090 since 11/26/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The reason for this vulnerability is this part of code:
idtentry stack_segment do_stack_segment has_error_code=1 paranoid=1The advisory points out:
On a 64-bit kernel, #SS can only happen in user code, on a failed iret to user space, a canonical violation on access via RSP or RBP, or a genuine stack segment violation in 32-bit kernel code. The first two cases don't need IST, and the latter two cases are unlikely fatal bugs, and promoting them to double faults would be fine.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79953 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.17.6-200.fc20 (2014-16632)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167410 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:1698-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
idtentry stack_segment do_stack_segment has_error_code=1
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (79953), SecurityFocus (BID 71250†), Secunia (SA62336†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031377†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47336†). The entries VDB-68280, VDB-68459, VDB-68573 and VDB-68574 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
