Summary
A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component DH Certificate Handler. The manipulation leads to cryptographic issue. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-0205. There is no exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). This issue affects an unknown part of the component DH Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is integrity.
The issue has been introduced in 06/01/2010. The weakness was shared 01/08/2015 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan with Prosecco as secadv_20150108.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0205 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
An OpenSSL server will accept a DH certificate for client authentication without the certificate verify message. This effectively allows a client to authenticate without the use of a private key. This only affects servers which trust a client certificate authority which issues certificates containing DH keys: these are extremely rare and hardly ever encountered.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1682 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81391 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : OpenSSL vulnerability (SOL16135)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350233 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: ALAS-2015-469).
Upgrading to version 1.0.0p or 1.0.1k eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Stephen Henson of the OpenSSL core team.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99708), Tenable (81391), SecurityFocus (BID 71941†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031513†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56880†). The entries VDB-68514, VDB-68515, VDB-68516 and VDB-68517 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
