The extensions APIs in the kernel in Apple iOS before 6.0.1 provide kernel addresses in responses that contain an OSBundleMachOHeaders key, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted app.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2012. The weakness was published 11/01/2012 by Mark Dowd and Eric Monti with ISS X-Force as HT5567 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3749 since 06/19/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65577 (Mac OS X 10.8.x < 10.8.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121020 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.3 and Security Update 2013-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-03-14-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
