A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox 34.0.5 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function mozilla::dom::AudioParamTimeline::AudioNodeInputValue of the component Web Audio Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was disclosed 01/13/2015 by Holger Fuhrmannek as MFSA2015-05 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8640 since 11/06/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

Security researcher Holger Fuhrmannek used the used the Address Sanitizer tool to discover a crash in Web Audio while manipulating timelines. This allowed for the a small block of memory with an uninitialized pointer to be read. The crash it not exploitable.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80538 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (bd62c640-9bb9-11e4-a5ad-000c297fb80f)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167588 (OpenSuSE Security Update for seamonkey (openSUSE-SU-2015:0192-1)).

Upgrading to version 35 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
