Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 34.0.5 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component WebRTC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Use-after-free vulnerability in the WebRTC implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 35.0, Firefox ESR 31.x before 31.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.32 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted track data.
The weakness was presented 01/13/2015 by Mitchell Harper as MFSA2015-06 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8641 since 11/06/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Security researcher Mitchell Harper discovered a read-after-free in WebRTC due to the way tracks are handled. This results in a either a potentially exploitable crash or incorrect WebRTC behavior.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80522 (Firefox ESR 31.x < 31.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167588 (OpenSuSE Security Update for seamonkey (openSUSE-SU-2015:0192-1)).
