Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 34.0.5 on Windows (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component Gecko Media Plugin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox before 35.0 on Windows allows remote attackers to bypass the Gecko Media Plugin (GMP) sandbox protection mechanism by leveraging access to the GMP process, as demonstrated by the OpenH264 plugin s process.
The weakness was shared 01/13/2015 by Nils as MFSA2015-07 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-8643 since 11/06/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
Security researcher Nils discovered a mechanism to break out of the Gecko Media Plugin (GMP) sandbox on Windows systems. The GMP sandbox is currently only used to host h.264 video playback using the OpenH264 plugin but is being developed to host other other media plugins. This bug would allow an attacker to escape or bypass the GMP sandbox if another exploitable bug is found in a GMP media plugin which allowed them to compromise the GMP process.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80538 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (bd62c640-9bb9-11e4-a5ad-000c297fb80f)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167588 (OpenSuSE Security Update for seamonkey (openSUSE-SU-2015:0192-1)).
Upgrading to version 35 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
