Details
A vulnerability was found in Sophos Anti-Virus (Anti-Malware Software) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function memoryRDWR of the component Visual Basic 6 File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 11/05/2012 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as sophailv2.pdf as confirmed document (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at lock.cmpxchg8b.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Sophos. As demonstrated in the initial paper, installing Sophos Antivirus exposes machines to considerable risk. If Sophos do not urgently improve their security posture, their continued deployment causes significant risk to global networks and infrastructure. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. In response to early access to the initial report, Sophos did allocate some resources to resolve the issues discussed, however they were cearly ill-equipped to handle the output of one co-operative, non-adversarial security researcher. A sophisticated state-sponsored or highly motivated attacker could devastate the entire Sophos user base with ease.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79813), Exploit-DB (22509), SecurityFocus (BID 56401†), OSVDB (87059†) and Secunia (SA51156†). nakedsecurity.sophos.com is providing further details.
