Sophos Anti-Virus Internet Explorer Protected Mode privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sophos Anti-Virus (Anti-Malware Software) (version now known). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Internet Explorer Protected Mode Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was released 11/05/2012 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as sophailv2.pdf as confirmed document (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at lock.cmpxchg8b.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. As demonstrated in the initial paper, installing Sophos Antivirus exposes machines to considerable risk. If Sophos do not urgently improve their security posture, their continued deployment causes significant risk to global networks and infrastructure. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso). The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. In response to early access to the initial report, Sophos did allocate some resources to resolve the issues discussed, however they were cearly ill-equipped to handle the output of one co-operative, non-adversarial security researcher. A sophisticated state-sponsored or highly motivated attacker could devastate the entire Sophos user base with ease.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (22509), SecurityFocus (BID 56401†), OSVDB (87058†), Secunia (SA51156†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027725†). nakedsecurity.sophos.com is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-6868, VDB-6865, VDB-6870 and VDB-6867. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
