Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Sophos Anti-Virus (Anti-Malware Software) (version unknown). This affects the function SARCcabStart of the component CAB Archive Handler. The manipulation of the argument CFDATA with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/05/2012 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as sophailv2.pdf as confirmed document (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at lock.cmpxchg8b.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Sophos. As demonstrated in the initial paper, installing Sophos Antivirus exposes machines to considerable risk. If Sophos do not urgently improve their security posture, their continued deployment causes significant risk to global networks and infrastructure. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. In response to early access to the initial report, Sophos did allocate some resources to resolve the issues discussed, however they were cearly ill-equipped to handle the output of one co-operative, non-adversarial security researcher. A sophisticated state-sponsored or highly motivated attacker could devastate the entire Sophos user base with ease.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79816), Exploit-DB (22509), SecurityFocus (BID 56401†), OSVDB (87062†) and Secunia (SA51156†). Further details are available at nakedsecurity.sophos.com. The entries VDB-6868, VDB-6865, VDB-6866 and VDB-6870 are pretty similar.
