Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle VM VirtualBox up to 3.2.24/4.0.26/4.1.34/4.2.26/4.3.14 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component Messages. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
OpenSSL before 0.9.8za, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0m, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1h does not properly restrict processing of ChangeCipherSpec messages, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to trigger use of a zero-length master key in certain OpenSSL-to-OpenSSL communications, and consequently hijack sessions or obtain sensitive information, via a crafted TLS handshake, aka the "CCS Injection" vulnerability.
The weakness was presented 01/20/2015 by Ivan Fratric as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - January 2015 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0224. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74348 (RHEL 5 / 6 : openssl097a and openssl098e (RHSA-2014:0626)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185081 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03046)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16270.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74348), SecurityFocus (BID 67898†), Secunia (SA58579†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50693†). Further details are available at blogs.oracle.com. See VDB-13457, VDB-13454, VDB-13453 and VDB-13452 for similar entries.
