Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X 10.10/10.10.1 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component bash. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was published 01/27/2015 by Michal Zalewski as HT204244 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-6277 since 09/09/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue. The advisory points out:
Multiple vulnerabilities existed in bash. These issues were addressed by updating bash to patch level 57.
A public exploit has been developed by Michal Zalewski in Python and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78067 (Bash Remote Code Execution (CVE-2014-6277 / CVE-2014-6278) (Shellshock)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351474 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for logbash: AL2012-2018-273 (ShellShock)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 31975. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16798.
