A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 16.0.2 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function nsTextEditorState::PrepareEditor. Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsTextEditorState::PrepareEditor function in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, Thunderbird before 17.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2012-4214.
The weakness was shared 11/20/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security as MFSA 2012-105 as confirmed advisory (Mozilla Blog). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5840 since 11/05/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63005 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1482)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120702 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1482)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
