A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component iSCSI dissector. The weakness was disclosed 11/28/2012 by Laura Chappell with Wireshark as wnpa-sec-2012-36 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5598 since 10/24/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in pcap File and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at wireshark.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 46 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73276 (CentOS 5 : wireshark (CESA-2014:0341)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350803 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: AL2012-2015-028).
Upgrading to version 1.6.12 or 1.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
