A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.3 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-usb.c of the component sFlow Dissector. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-5594 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A public exploit has been developed in pcap File. It is possible to download the exploit at wireshark.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 56 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166686 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0238-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
