envvars (aka envvars-std) in the Apache HTTP Server before 2.4.2 places a zero-length directory name in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH, which allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DSO in the current working directory during execution of apachectl.

The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2012 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at blogs.oracle.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0883 since 01/19/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
