A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Irfan Skiljan IrfanView 4.33 (Image Processing Software). This affects an unknown function of the file tif_ojpeg.c. Heap-based buffer overflow in tif_ojpeg.c in the OJPEG decoder in LibTIFF before 3.9.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted TIFF file.
The weakness was presented 12/12/2012 by Tavis Ormandy with Secunia as confirmed changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at irfanview.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-5022 since 12/09/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75621 (openSUSE Security Update : libtiff-devel (openSUSE-SU-2011:0405-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165190 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:008)).
Upgrading to version 4.35 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
