A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 17.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gfxTextRun::ShrinkToLigatureBoundaries. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the gfxTextRun::ShrinkToLigatureBoundaries function in Mozilla Firefox before 18.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.1, Thunderbird before 17.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.1, and SeaMonkey before 2.15 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted document.
The weakness was shared 01/08/2013 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2013-02 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0771 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63463 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (a4ed6632-5aa9-11e2-8fcb-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166684 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for MozillaFirefox (SUSE-SU-2013:0292-1)).
Upgrading to version 18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
